OBJECTS OF CULTURAL HERITAGE AS A RESOURCE OF ATTRACTIVENESS OF THE SUBURBAN AREA OF KALUGA
Kazakova A.Y. pp.64-74

Abstract: Due to weak elaboration of suburbanistic perspective in contemporary sociology the analysis of sources of local identity of residents of the suburban zones of Russian cities strengthening seems to be theoretically and practically significant. Suburban area of Kaluga today is not attractive for permanent living place. The balance of suburbs’ settlement patterns is supported by inbound migration and rotations of rural and urban residents. Suburban development is constrained by scarce social and socio-cultural infrastructure in rural locality as a permanent place of residence. An important barrier to the development of suburban lifestyles, in addition to consumer qualities of the life environment, is it’s territorial stigma of semiotic poverty, cultural exclusion, which formes the inhabitants’ negative territorial identity. The contents of stigma (cultural monotony, lack of interest, evidence of involvement in the general history and traditions of the settlements, namely, cities) do not always correspond to objective consumer characteristics of the area, to its quality as a living environment. Considering the relationship between the semiotic richness of the territory and territorial identity of the inhabitants, we come to the conclusion that they are non-linear communication: the lack of significant loci reduces the prestige of the neighborhood, and, indirectly, the favorability of living conditions evaluation, but selective attention to the preservation of monuments, cultural identity depends on it weakly and is distributed between different functional areas of the city unevenly. Reclamation of cultural heritage sites and protected areas is able to increase the attractiveness of the environmental image. Cautious and strictly controlled inclusion of cultural heritage in the area of public use is able to increase recreational, identity and tourism potential of Kaluga suburbs.

Key words: territorial-settlement communities, quality of life environment, attractiveness, cultural heritage.
